CAMDEN, NY - The Camden High School chapter of the National Honor Society welcomed 37 new members to its ranks on Wednesday, November 16th. The chapter held its annual induction ceremony in front of a large gathering of family, friends, and well-wishers at the Camden High School Auditorium.
The 37 new members will join 37 other active members as part of this prestigious society. Membership is open to juniors and seniors. To join, a candidate must achieve an overall average of 90 percent or better in the classroom. Grades are just the beginning, as all members must embody the core values of the society.
NHS encompasses the four tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, and character, as explained here by co-advisor Heidi Libertella.
Scholarship - “A student in NHS is expected to maintain high academic standards for admittance and continued membership in the society.”
Leadership - “NHS seeks those who are leaders, and those who can grow into leaders. The society gives a variety of leadership opportunities to members that can help them improve problem-solving skills.”
Service - “NHS members are encouraged to be of service to not only their school, but their community through various activities.”
Character - “An NHS member should display integrity at all times, care about others, be honest, and respectful.”
With these qualities valued by the society, Libertella reiterated that each group member will be held to very high expectations as a student, and a citizen of their community.
“As a group, it is hoped these students will step forward and help in various community service opportunities and will be willing to lend helping hands to those in need,” Libertella said.
The induction ceremony was led by masters of ceremonies Koen Turner and Jerome Seidl. Turner and Seidl are the sitting president and vice president, respectively.
The evening featured the traditional candle ceremony, recognition of the current membership, and remarks from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ravo Root.
The evening’s guest speaker was Mr. Robert Steria. The Society continued a long-standing tradition to honor Steria as he became the society’s newest honorary adult member. He becomes the fifteenth individual to receive that honor. Honorary adult members are chosen by NHS members in recognition of the positive influence they have on the school community.
