Student Receives Certificate

CAMDEN, NY - On Thursday, March 6th, 42 eighth grade students were called to the stage at the Camden Middle School Auditorium. As they crossed the stage, a short bio with their interests and accomplishments was read. And once they sat down, they could call themselves one more thing: A National Junior Honor Society Inductee. The students formally became the latest members of the Camden Middle School chapter in a formal ceremony in front of family and friends.

NJHS Induction is one of the highest honors a middle school student can receive. Students must meet the initial requirement of a 92 percent cumulative overall average at the middle school to be considered. And good grades simply get you to the starting line on this journey. There are additional requirements including a demonstrated commitment to school and community activities, a written essay about the guiding principles of National Junior Honor Society, and all members must receive final approval from a faculty member council.

By joining the society, a student commits themselves to working toward the ideals of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Members are expected to set a superior example for their peers in all areas, and also take a leadership role in the school community. In the coming days and weeks, they’ll be working with students at Camden Elementary School, participating in a virtual global exchange with students from Kenya, and will also be working on a project to benefit the Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse.

The ceremony included the NJHS Pledge, the traditional candle ceremony highlighting the society’s four pillars, the presentation of the NJHS emblem, and the induction of members announced by advisors Nate and Kate Donaleski. Each new member received a pin and certificate from principal Brittany DerCola, and assistant principal Sarah Roth-Trnchik. DerCola also delivered the evening’s keynote remarks.

An orchestral prelude was provided by a select string ensemble that included students Taylor Donaldson, Annabelle Mikitin, and Annabelle Slover, and orchestra director Jennifer Chase.
