On Saturday, January 11th, the Camden High School girls’ varsity wrestling team traveled to Elmira, NY to take on a talented regional field in the Southern Tier Memorial Tournament. The Blue Devils placed 17th in the team standings out of 30 scoring teams, and were headlined by an individual championship and two podium finishes.
Third-year varsity wrestler Rylie Meagher, a freshman, was the champion in the 114 class. Meagher was tested early with a 9-5 decision win over West Genesee’s Adaline DeCapio in the first round, but dominated the rest of the way. She won her next two matches by technical fall with a combined 23-0 score, then won by fall in 2:30 in the semifinals to set up a finals bout with Spencer-Van Etten’s Dallas Bohling. Meagher secured a fall on Bohling in 2:45 to claim the title.
Junior Astro Johnson placed fifth in the 152 class. Johnson took an early loss, but bounced back through the consolation bracket. The second-year varsity wrestler scored a pair of fall victories in the consolation bracket and fell just one match short of the consolation finals. For an impressive exclamation point on the day, Johnson avenged the opening round defeat in the fifth place match with a victory by fall over Oneonta’s Grace Kohn.
Eighth grader Anzleigh Johnson competed in the 107 bracket, and picked up a pair of victories in the consolation bracket. In the 138 bracket, sophomore Ellie Miller picked up a win by fall in the consolation rounds, and freshman Abigail Hebble did the same in the 165 classification. Lola Miller and Kamryn Gloude also competed in the 114 bracket.
