CAMDEN, NY - Members of the Camden community were treated to a night of spirited, skillful, entertaining, and occasionally hilarious competition on Friday, December 2nd. The Camden varsity basketball teams showed fans a bit of what to expect this season, while a team of Camden coaches competed in a game against area law enforcement personnel as part of the brand new “Camden HoopsFest” event at Camden High School.
The event was created in hopes of making it an annual event, and the attendance indicated there is interest in doing so. The stands opposite the bench area were completely full of students, parents, staff members, community members, and friends of the basketball programs.
The evening began with player introductions. The event’s master of ceremonies, Kenny Morrison, gave each player and cheerleader a rousing introduction, and the ovation from the crowd matched that energy.
Interspersed with performances by the Camden High School cheerleading squad, the varsity basketball squads competed within their own teams, and against each other in a series of challenges. There was a skills competition similar to the “Shooting Stars” event held at the NBA All-Star Weekend, a three-point shooting competition, and intrasquad scrimmages.
After the Camden varsity teams showed their skills, it was time for the main event of the evening. A team of Camden coaches did battle with area law enforcement officers in a “Cops vs. Coaches” basketball game. The crowd was enthusiastic, and their enthusiasm was rewarded with an outstanding show by both teams. The law enforcement team pulled out the win by three points in triple overtime.
Thank you to all who attended, competed, and participated in making this wonderful evening happen.
