On January 31st, students at Camden High, participated in the English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare competition. This year marked the 30th anniversary for Camden in the event. Students had to memorize and perform a 20 line monologue from a Shakespearean work. In the school-wide competition, Camden presented awards to six honorees. Marley Hilliker, Trevor Young, and Dylan Keyes earned an honorable mention. Isabella Wing took 3rd place and 2nd place was awarded to Alyssa Vera. This year’s winner was Owen Carr, who portrayed Shylock from The Merchant of Venice. The competition proved to be a challenge for the finalists, all of whom aspired to place first, and earn the chance to serve as Camden’s representative for the regional round in Syracuse. Next month, Owen will head to Syracuse Stage to perform his monologue and a Shakespearean sonnet. The winner of the regional competition will advance to nationals in New York City. Theater teacher Stephanie Heath is honored to take over this annual competition that began 30 years ago under the direction of Mrs. Robin Edkin and Ms. Joni Deperno-Zahas. Congratulations to all participants and thank you to judges Joni DePerno-Zahas, Robin Edkin, and Patti Kimball. 1st Picture: Winner Owen Carr and Teacher and Drama Advisory Stephanie Heath 2nd picture: (All finalists) Bottom row: (left to right)- Trevor Young and Dylan Keyes Top Row- (Left to right) Stephanie Heath (Theater Teacher and Drama Advisor), Marley Hilliker, Isabella Wing, Owen Carr, Alysssa Vera, Amanda Hughes (Theater Teacher) 3rd picture (All contestants) Bottom Row- Stephanie Heath, Hailey Hicks, Jacob LaBreux, Annaka Stauring, Trevor Young, Amanda Hughes Top Row- Dylan Keyes, Marley Hilliker, Ayden Kuc, Owen Carr, Isabella Wing, Aylssa Vera, Ryan Brown
