Many of our elementary school students harbor a natural curiosity when it comes to science, technology, and innovation. Each year, that curiosity intersects with tradition to create something special at McConnellsville Elementary School. The school held its annual learning fair on the evening of Thursday, March 16th.
The Learning Fair is an exciting school-wide event, with students ranging from Pre-K to
fourth grade participating. It is a vehicle for students to share their love of learning and their favorite subject or hobby with others. Students do research and prepare presentation materials on a topic of their choice to bring to the fair and share with the entire school community. Each student's chosen topic can be a science experiment, a school subject, or a favorite hobby. The only limit is a student's own imagination.
The result is an impressive showcase of knowledge where 40-50 students typically present each year. While showcasing the final product is exciting, students also build research skills that can help them in their future at school, and in the workforce later on.
The fair was started by retired teacher Kathy Wood. Since Wood’s retirement approximately a decade ago, school librarian Shelley Malenowski has assumed leadership over this long-running and exciting event.
