The Camden Central School District has announced the hiring of Mr. Andy Thompson as interim transportation supervisor. The appointment was confirmed by the Board of Education at its August 8th, 2023 meeting.
Thompson will serve the District for the entirety of the 2023-24 school year. He will begin full-time duties by August 22nd in preparation for the upcoming school year, and will be working to familiarize himself with his new role starting immediately.
He brings an incredible wealth of relevant experience to his new opportunity at Camden.
Andy has been working in school transportation for over 40 years. His career began in 1981 as a driver working for Birnie Bus Service. Two years later, he was promoted to the role of Terminal Manager, and in 1985, he was appointed as the company’s Director of Operations. As Director of Operations, Andy maintained oversight of 1,100 employees in thirteen school districts across the region, and held this position until 2009.
In 2009, Thompson was hired by the Rome City School District to be its Transportation Supervisor. At Rome, he worked with the District’s contracted transportation providers to facilitate the transport of over 5,000 students each school day, along with maintaining a limited in-house staff and fleet for specialized transportation needs. He served in this role until 2022, when he retired from permanent employment.
Andy spent the 2022-23 school year serving as the interim transportation director in the Oriskany Central School District. He comes highly recommended to us as a professional who is dependable, has vast knowledge of policies and procedures, and can handle difficult situations when called upon to do so.
A search for a permanent director will be held at a later date. Please join us in welcoming Andy to Camden!
