Camden Middle School is proud to announce its designation as a New York State and National Essential Elements School to Watch. The Essential Elements Schools to Watch program recognizes outstanding middle-level schools across the nation that demonstrate academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structures that support high-quality learning experiences for all students.
"We are thrilled and honored to receive this designation as a New York State and National Essential Elements School to Watch," Principal Brittany DerCola said. "This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, students, and community partners who collaborate tirelessly to ensure that Camden Middle School remains a place where every student feels valued and supported. I am so proud to be the leader of this building."
This prestigious recognition highlights the school's commitment to academic excellence, social equity, development of the whole student and commitment to continuous improvement. There are currently only 47 schools in New York State that have received this designation.
“Camden Middle School is now known on both a state and national level by receiving this honor,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ravo Root said. “Congratulations to our Principal Mrs. DerCola, the Principal’s Advisory Council, and of course our incredible Faculty, Staff and Students. Their hard work, dedication and passion for Middle Level Education made this happen. Go Blue!”
The honor comes after a challenging long-term application process that includes a thorough research-based review of the school and its programs, site visits, written statements about the school’s achievements and plans addressing identified areas for continued improvement. To reading teacher Dr. Tara Baker, the opportunity to reflect through this process will pay dividends in the years ahead.
“Camden Middle School staff and students are honored to be granted the designation of a School to Watch,” Baker said. “ Through the application process, we have learned what areas we could improve upon. This reflection process has led us to develop new opportunities for our students and also serves as a means for us to grow closer as a school community.”
Camden Middle School's dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment has been a cornerstone of its educational philosophy. By prioritizing the social, emotional, and academic growth of its students, the school has created a culture where every individual can thrive in and out of the classroom. Through innovative teaching practices, personalized learning opportunities, and a focus on student engagement, the school empowers its students to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens.
“Being a School To Watch allows us to highlight to the community and other schools all the unique programs and opportunities we offer to our middle school students,” Seventh Grade Teacher Stephanie Smith said. “I hope that this designation ignites a positive image for Camden Middle School. Everyone in this building works so hard to meet all of our students where they are at and give them opportunities to grow into the wonderfully unique humans they are. In a world where teachers are not always given proper recognition, it is nice to have other middle school educators see the significance of the work we are doing.”
The daily work put in by the school community to make this designation a reality has not gone unnoticed by Camden Middle School students.
“I was very excited to learn that our school is one of the best in America,” Sixth Grade Student Katherine Dean said. “I have always known this school is great. I love being a student here because of my teachers and all of the support staff. Everyone is extremely dedicated. They go above and beyond to help us as students. I have seen this in class and after school activities. With this in mind, I am proud to say I go to Camden Middle School with hardworking principals and caring teachers.”
“Being one of only 47 Schools to Watch in New York State is a huge honor,” Eighth Grade Student Troy Cox said. “I know all of the teachers worked really hard to give us this opportunity.”
Camden Middle School will be formally recognized at an awards ceremony during the National Forum Schools to Watch Conference in Washington, D.C. in June 2024. This achievement not only reflects the school's commitment to excellence but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for middle-level educators nationwide.
