On Thursday, April 11th, the Camden High School Book Club had two teams participate in the Battle of the Books regional competition, hosted by the MOBOCES School Library System. Each team was responsible for reading 10 books selected by MOBOCES School Library System Officials.
The list of books included examples from the following genres: Historical Fiction, Mystery, Nonfiction, Autobiography, and Graphic Novels. The titles were as follows:
One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus
Rhinos in Nebraska by Alison Pearce Stevens
Graceling: The Graphic Novel by Kristin Cashore
Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley
The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Maus 1: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman
Girl in the Blue Coat by Monica Hesse
Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah
Heartstopper, Volume 1 by Alice Oseman
We Are Not Free by Traci Chee
This was Camden’s first year competing at the High School level, and the District stood as the only one with two teams in that division. The teams met weekly throughout the school year to discuss the books. Participants were asked to answer questions by providing the full title and author’s name within 30 seconds. There were 22 questions. Tie-breaker questions were available, but were not ultimately needed. At the end, one of our teams had earned enough points to take first place! Congratulations to Leo Diehl, Bella Keller, Natalie Hotaling, and Evelyn Hotaling, also known as the "Grim Readers".
Thank you to Marley Hiliker, Addy Clements, Dolmae Honrales, and Rylee Greggains for participating, being great teammates and helping Camden take the win.
The team was led by Kelly Doran and Nanette Burt.
