Students at Nexus Center

On Wednesday, November 20th, Mrs. Dacey’s 4th period MVCC Marketing BM 120 class from Camden High School visited nearby Utica to explore its marketing marvels.  They explored the likes of Utica University’s Athletic Facilities, the Utica University Nexus Center, and the Stanley Theatre.

Utica University Athletic Facilities
By Myah, Rylee, and Lauren

During this trip, we visited Utica University’s athletic centers and the Utica University Dome. Our tour was led by Associate Athletic Director, Intramural Director and Compliance Coordinator Jim Murnane.

On the trip, we were exposed to the many athletic resources that Utica has to offer including the Harold Thomas Clark, Jr. Athletic Center, Kunath Fitness Center and the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center. The class learned about how the facilities were used, who uses them, when they are available and how they market their 29 sports teams in NCAA Division III.

Utica University also rents out parts of the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center for other teams and sports clubs in the local area. On this trip we even encountered some Camden High School alumni that were excited to see their hometown school visiting! It is always great to see Camden alumni succeeding in their new college life!

Thank You Utica University, and Jim Murnane for having us!

Utica University Nexus Center
By Lily, Ellie, Kassandra

Who - Our tour guides were Alicia DeSarro who is the VP of Corporate Partnerships,  and Lochlann Murphy who is the Operations Manager of the Nexus Center. The Nexus Center is for athletes such as: ice hockey players, ice skaters, soccer players, and lacrosse players from all over the world. The Nexus Center is also for the public to use and for sports fans who want to come watch the athletes play.

What - The Nexus Center is mainly an ice hockey center, it is also used for many more sports like soccer, lacrosse, ice hockey, wrestling, and professional skating. The center holds three rinks that are all able to be converted into turf for other sports held there. There is a bar that serves food and drinks for the customers spending time there, and a large seating area around the rinks. The building connects to the Adirondack Bank Center which holds one rink. They have held the World Lacrosse Championships with many countries coming to Utica, this boosted the economy around Utica drastically and brought pride to the area. Many countries loved the area and building so much they have requested to come back.

When - The Nexus Center was built in November of 2022.

Where - The Nexus Center is located at 300 Oriskany St W, Utica, NY 13502.

Why - Taking our Marketing Class to the Nexus Center was very beneficial to our class because the Nexus Center is full of advertisements for other companies. The Nexus Center is going to have new advertisements that have never been seen before in the United States. The Nexus Center deepened the students' understanding on how real companies use marketing to their advantage as a company.

Wingstop
By Cody, Landon, Felipe, and Jonah
At the end of the trip they went to Wingstop to eat and learn about marketing in fast food businesses. But first, they had to persuade their amazing business teacher Mrs. Dacey for the ability to go there. Students first brought up the idea of Wingstop when they realized the location was only 3 minutes away from the Nexus Center, their last location on the tour. It would soon become a popular choice as most students on the trip would see themselves getting food there.

Students quickly discussed how marketable Wingstop has become over the years, gaining a marketing lesson that was unplanned as Wingstop has gone viral. If you have kept up with the trends of today you may have noticed Wingstop more than a few times, whether that be on TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook.

Wingstop opened its doors in 1994 with the mission to serve the world. The company quickly became a very notable company after 1997 when they became a corporate franchise. Within 5 years in 2002 they achieved one billion wings served. In over 20 years of service, they have nearly perfected their flavors and it has become a fast food giant.

That's not hard to notice either as it was one of the longer stops of the trip because of how busy it was, even when most of our students ordered online. Finally we have to thank Mrs Dacey for scheduling the trip, The CCSD Bus garage for being flexible around our schedule, and the CHS administration for the approval of the trip.

The Stanley Theater
The Stanley Theater provides a unique opportunity to learn about marketing because of the diverse events it holds. There are no truly permanent tenants in the building, which means every day brings a new audience and a new product to sell. During their visit, students learned about the historic facility and how it creates revenue streams while adding to local culture and keeping the doors open for generations to enjoy.
