The Camden Central School District athletic department is pleased to announce that all eight of its fall varsity sports teams earned Scholar-Athlete Team honors from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for the 2024 season. The awards were announced recently by the Association based in Albany. The honors reward excellence in the classroom while balancing the challenges of playing a varsity-level sport.
Across those eight teams, a grand total of 87 of the department’s varsity student-athletes qualified as scholar-athletes for the fall season. To achieve scholar-athlete recognition, a student must carry an overall average of 90 percent or better.
To receive the Scholar-Athlete Team recognition certificate, the average GPA of the top 75 percent of a team’s roster must be greater than or equal to 90 percent. Only students with an average of 90 or above on each recognized team receive the scholar-athlete pin, while non-qualifying athletes included in the 75 percent calculation receive a certificate for being part of a Scholar-Athlete Team.
Individual honors are typically given to qualifying athletes not on a qualifying team, but the entire department received the team award status this season.
Varsity football led the department with seventeen athletes achieving Scholar-Athlete status. Varsity field hockey was a close second, with sixteen of its athletes making the cut. Varsity girls’ soccer was third among Camden teams with fourteen players receiving a Scholar-Athlete pin.
