6th grade ELA teacher Karleen Gilsenan and agriculture club advisor Brianne Willson have partnered with Cornell Cooperative Extension to bring Agriculture lessons to CMS.
Mrs. Gilsenan invited Colleen McEwen, Ag in the Classroom Dairy Educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County, to visit 6th-grade students in her ELA classroom. Students were led through a lesson that focused on the path of production for a processed product (butter), from farm to table.
Mrs. Willson, the CMS agriculture club advisor, has also invited Cornell Cooperative Extension representatives to our agriculture club meetings to talk about sheep/wool and maple syrup production. The club also assembled two aeroponics units and are growing lettuce and basil.
The Agriculture in the Classroom program is a state-operated program created to provide a network through which Pre-K through 12 students and teachers will improve their agricultural literacy. An agriculturally literate individual possesses awareness, knowledge, and appreciation for the agriculture industry.
