Camden Middle School readers of all ages joined together to read "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown as this year’s One School, One Book selection in May and June. Students, teachers, administrators, custodians, bus drivers, and CMS families followed the adventures of Roz, a robot who finds herself all alone on a remote, wild island.
The Wild Robot tells the story of what happens when nature and technology collide. Students and staff kicked off this year’s reading celebration with the author, Peter Brown, during a virtual presentation. Mr. Brown walked the audience through his journey as an author and illustrator. He even created an illustration while answering questions from CMS students!
There were multiple One School, One Book afterschool activities that students were invited to enjoy. Naomi the dancing robot, an Ozobot obstacle course, a game of Kahoot, a presentation by the CMS robotics club, a visit from the Utica Zoomobile, and a painting party with Mrs. Steria kept things at CMS as action-packed as the novel.
Camden Middle School also held a build-your-own-robot contest! Students were encouraged to use recycled and repurposed household items to create their robots.
Winners were: 5th grade - Kyle-Leigh Albrecht, 6th grade - Troy Cox, 7th grade - Madelyn Blair, and 8th grade - Chloe Harp.
All robots remained on display at CMS throughout May and June.CMS’s One School, One Book celebration closed with a Scholastic Book Fair thanks to the generous support of the Virginia Tuthill Foundation, and all students were encouraged to start thinking about their summer reading plans.
