Mrs. Dacey's MVCC Business/Personal Law class at Camden High School invited retired State Police officer Mr. Jon Hooker as a guest speaker on Monday, January 23rd. Mr. Hooker discussed a variety of topics and shared an honest perspective of his time in the State Police. Students sent several questions for Mr. Hooker to address. Topics covered included:
The NYS State Trooper application/testing/hiring/training process.
The differences in being a State Police officer compared to working as an officer at the county or local level.
How he handles split-second decisions in the line of duty.
His most memorable and dangerous calls he’s responded to over his career.
Mr. Hooker also encouraged students to develop sound communication skills and make sure they’re always treating others with respect. Both are important in dealing with any challenging or difficult situation.
He also educated students on the difference between burglary, robbery and larceny, and weapons laws including concealed/open carry. He talked to the students about how those laws can differ by state.
The experience was a memorable and educational one for students as they learned more on the daily life of a law enforcement officer.
