Middle school students were introduced to a new coding application called Bitsbox! This program teaches kids to build simple apps by writing real, text-based computer code. The coding language used is a variant of JavaScript, with the addition of a few dozen special commands (words, basically) that make it easier for newcomers and young learners to build cool stuff quickly. Sixth grade students Addison Shovlin and Delilah VanSlyke were able to change the background in the software, add a pie, and make the virtual pie explode. They also added a robot to the screen and made it dance. While working in a fun virtual environment, these students had the opportunity to learn some of the fundamentals of professional programming that they may be able to use later in life!
