On Saturday, Camden, NY joined thousands of communities across the country in participating in the Wreaths Across America program for a fifth consecutive year. The program seeks to honor veterans and their service with a dignified seasonal touch by laying a wreath of ten balsam bouquets at veteran gravesites across all 50 states and beyond. The program’s stated mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who have served, and teach the next generation about what those commitments mean.
Wreaths Across America takes place each December, and began with a wreathmaker in Maine who had a vision to have his surplus wreaths put to use at Arlington National Cemetery. That effort grew by leaps and bounds to ultimately become an event touching every corner of the country.
Over 300 wreaths were presented at the graves of local heroes as part of Camden’s observance, which were supplied by local donors. Several living veterans from our community were also recognized during the event.
The occasion included a heartfelt ceremony at Freedom Park, where Camden Central School District students had the honor of taking part. Junior Mikinzie Collins was selected for the ceremonial playing of “Taps”, and the Camden High School Select Choral Ensemble performed “The Star Spangled Banner”. Several CCSD students also participated in the wreath laying portion of the program, which took place at area cemeteries.
